Planning v Jumping straight in

The idea for a kingfisher came from coinciding events.

The first is that a kingfisher is nesting alongside the canal between Sims and Rea Bridges.
A flash of blue and gold.

Then my mother brought my grandson a kingfisher toy. While I showed him how they dived in to catch fish and he was playing with it, when the idea of trying to capture the movement came into my head.

Problem with flow art is that it flows….

Sketch the idea

Sketch books are great to try out ideas, shapes colours. I often use a grid when think how I want objects placed. It is a little stylized as I am thinking about the shapes and colours at this point

Second go – one half

Paint the head, and the start of the body with acrylic paint to get the placement right.
Concentrate on the eye and then the beak using posca pens for accuracy
Then do background – this is gold and bronze resin – barely enough to cover.

Finishing off

  • Re-paint in the beak and eye where covered by background
  • Add the resin for the body and blow out to give the effect of movement
  • As the resin is getting sticky fill in the head with a limited amount so there is texture and it doesn’t flow outside the required lines
  • Add the water splash
